Donald Trump’s Control of D.C. Police Raises Concerns for Democracy

Former President Donald Trump is taking direct control of the local police in Washington, D.C., and sending in the National Guard. Many believe this move supports an authoritarian agenda and threatens democracy. Across history, leaders with similar tendencies have used such power to silence opposition.

Donald Trump appears to be doing the same—using the military to intimidate protesters and show force. This could discourage peaceful demonstrations and weaken democratic rights. The Home Rule Act gives the president the right to control D.C.’s police during emergencies. But right now, there is no such emergency. Street crime exists, but it is at its lowest point in decades, according to the Justice Department.

Corporate crime—fraud, pollution, risky workplaces, and scams—is Washington’s greater issue. In comparison with street crime, these are far more harmful. However, both Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have been gentle when it comes to corporate misconduct. They have redirected resources toward mass deportations, cut back on investigations, and avoided criminal proceedings.

Donald Trump has also spoken about homelessness in D.C. The issue is real, but his actions make it worse. Telling people without homes to “move out” does nothing to solve the problem. Real solutions, like investing in affordable housing, were not part of his tax and budget plans. Instead, his policies gave big tax cuts to the rich and corporations, while cutting healthcare for many Americans. These healthcare cuts could increase homelessness, as Medicaid often supports housing programs. Trump’s administration has also considered blocking funds to fight fentanyl overdoses, making the crisis worse.

Many critics say Donald Trump’s actions in D.C. are not about public safety. They are about distracting from political weakness and pushing his loyalist agenda. His recent moves, like appointing people who back his election denial claims, fit this pattern. Washington does not need National Guard troops to patrol its streets. What the city truly needs is representation in Congress and more federal support. This is not just a D.C. issue. Trump’s approach could set an example for militarizing law enforcement across the country. How America responds now will help decide whether the nation moves toward democracy or authoritarianism.
