As starvation spreads and Israel faces mounting international pressure to permit more food into the territory, a UN-backed food security agency has issued its starkest alert to date, warning that “the worst-case scenario of famine” is occurring in Gaza.

In an alert, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) stated that “growing evidence indicates that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths,

” Adding that “conflict and displacement have intensified, and access to food and other essential items and services has plummeted to unprecedented levels.”

According to the IPC, the alert does not officially qualify as famine but rather serves to “draw urgent attention to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation.

” It further stated that “a new IPC analysis is to be conducted without delay given the most recent information and data made available.”

More than 20,000 children were admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition between April and mid-July, the IPC said, with more than 3,000 severely malnourished.

The alert called for “immediate action” to halt the fighting and enable “unimpeded, large-scale, life-saving humanitarian response,” stating that

“The latest data indicates that famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City.”

The IPC stated in May that the territory was at “high risk” of famine, the most serious kind of hunger crisis, and that all residents of the enclave were enjoying “high levels of acute food security.”

The international community is putting increasing pressure on Israel to lift its blockade, let aid into Gaza, and put an end to the conflict.

Contrary to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s earlier claims that there is no starvation in Gaza, US President Donald Trump said Monday that there is “real starvation” in the region in some of his most forceful remarks on the situation.

In Turn berry, Scotland, Trump told reporters, “That’s real starvation stuff.” You can’t pretend that I don’t see it. We will therefore become even more involved.

In order to alleviate the situation, Trump also stated that the US would establish “food centres” in Gaza.

JD Vance, the vice president, also bemoaned pictures that were emerging from the area under siege.

“I’m not sure if everyone has seen these pictures. You have some incredibly tragic cases. During a visit to Canton, Ohio, on Monday, Vance told reporters, “You have young children who are obviously starving to death.”

In addition to saying, “We have to wage war on Hamas so that those folks stop preventing food from coming into this territory,” he added, “Israel has to do more to let that aid in.”

In order to allow more aid to reach people, Israel declared over the weekend that it would implement a daily “tactical pause in military activity” in three areas of Gaza.

The action would “refute the false claim of deliberate starvation in the Gaza Strip,” according to the military.

Although Israel has permitted foreign nations to airdrop aid into the country, the UN and other aid organisations have previously criticised the practice as being expensive, risky, and inadequate.

In total, over 60,000 people have died.

Because Israel’s war on Hamas, the started almost two years ago, more than 60,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry on Tuesday.

According to the defence ministry, the death toll is currently at 60,034, with 113 more deaths in the last day.

The announcement comes after discussions ended last week without a deal, creating question on the possibility of a ceasefire anytime soon.

The war started when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking another 250 hostages

When releasing death tolls, Gazan authorities do not differentiate between civilians and Hamas combatants; however, the UN and the health ministry report that women and children account for the majority of fatalities.

And since many thousands are still thought to be buried beneath debris, the actual number may be much higher.

Israel acknowledges that its war in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of a considerable number of Palestinian civilians. However, it has long maintained that Hamas uses civilians as “human shields” to embed itself and that statistics from the Hamas-run health ministry are inflated.

Two prominent Israeli human rights organisations became the first to accuse Israel of “committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” on Monday.

An “examination of Israel’s policy in the Gaza Strip and its horrific outcomes, together with statements by senior Israeli politicians and military commanders about the goals of the attack,” according to B’Tselem, led to that “unequivocal conclusion.”

Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), another Israeli organisation, declared that it would join B’Tselem in denouncing Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide.

It documented what it described as the “deliberate and systematic extermination of the health system in Gaza” in a separate legal and medical analysis.

David Mencer, a spokesperson for the Israeli government, denied the report. He told reporters that Israel has permitted aid to enter Gaza and that “we have free speech in this country but we strongly reject this claim.”
