One of the most popular Hindu holidays in India, Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of knowledge, wealth, and good fortune. Ganesh Chaturthi will happen on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
According to the Hindu astronomical calendar, the celebration starts on the Chaturthi Tithi (fourth day) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. The ten-day event, which usually takes place in August or September, ends with the ceremonial immersion of Lord Ganesha idols in bodies of water, known as Ganesh Visarjan.

Ganesh Chaturthi represents the emergence of faith and the breakdown of barriers. Lord Ganesha is worshipped as Siddhivinayak (wish granter) and Vighnahara (obstacle remover). Worshipping him at this time, according to devotees, brings growth, success, and wisdom.
The festival also has cultural and social significance, especially in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. Public celebrations feature elaborate pandals, eco-friendly idols, dance, music, and community feasts.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness around sustainable celebrations. Many cities now encourage the use of clay idols, ban harmful paints, and promote artificial immersion tanks to protect water bodies and aquatic life.
The dates and puja timings mentioned above are based on standard Hindu Panchang calculations and may differ slightly by region. For the most accurate timings and rituals, consult your local priest or Panchang.
