Due to political tensions, brothers in Barmer, Rajasthan, have been waiting for their sister to join them in celebrating Raksha Bandhan for the past twelve years.

One of the most beloved Hindu holidays, Raksha Bandhan, honors the sacrosanct relationship between siblings. Today, Saturday, August 9, is Raksha Bandhan, and like every year for the past 12 years, Ran Singh of Barmer, Rajasthan, feels that the day is not complete.

The border between Pakistan and Umarkot, where his sister Lahari Kanwar resides, acts as a wall between their Rakhi celebrations. Since Lahari’s marriage in Umarkot, the siblings have been kept apart by politics, distance, and documentation.

Neither Ran Singh nor Lahari have been able to travel to Pakistan or Barmer for more than ten years. On the day of the festival, Ran Singh and his two brothers in Barmer eagerly await the adornment of their wrists with their sister’s Rakhi, but their hopes are crushed at the border.

Their family, which includes four brothers and one sister, is greatly affected by the emotional gap. Jethu Singh, their fourth brother, is still in Pakistan, but Hakam Singh, Gokal Singh, and Ran Singh live in Barmer.

Originally from Umarkot, Ran Singh and his family relocated to Indira Nagar, Barmer, India in 2014, along with his father, Sawai Singh. He last saw Lahari prior to his relocation, and their distance has only widened since then. Ran Singh frequently finds it difficult to contain his tears when he sees his empty wrist on Raksha Bandhan.

The only time they were close to getting back together was when Lahari was granted a visa, but it was revoked after the Pahalgam attack. Since then, border restrictions and the political climate have kept them apart.

The Raksha Bandhan celebration still feels lacking without Lahari, despite the fact that 16 members of Ran Singh’s family now reside in Barmer.

According to Ran Singh, his wrist has been untied for a long twelve years. He hopes that the siblings will be able to cross the border and fortify their unbreakable bond if the Thar Express resumes.
