Tata Motors is one of the leading companies in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market. After the success of the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Punch EV, many people have been waiting for the launch of the Tata Altroz EV. First shown as a concept in 2019 and later at Auto Expo 2020, the Altroz EV was expected to be a stylish and premium electric hatchback.

Why the Delay in Altroz EV?

One of the main reasons for the delay is packaging the battery under the car. The Altroz has a low design, and placing the battery under the floor reduces the ground clearance. This affects the way the car looks and drives. If Tata raises the height to fit the battery, the car may lose its sporty hatchback design.

So, Tata Motors decided to pause the project instead of compromising on the car’s looks or comfort. The company is working on improving its EV platform to better fit the battery in future models.

Altroz EV and Punch EV – Same EV Platform

The Altroz EV is expected to use the same Acti.EV platform that powers the Punch EV. This platform is designed to support modern electric cars and offer better space for the battery.

Once Tata improves this platform, it will be easier to fit the battery in the Altroz without affecting the ground clearance or design. This update might also allow Tata to offer two battery options, just like in the Punch EV – one smaller and one larger, offering more range.

Expected Battery and Range

While exact figures are not confirmed, the Tata Altroz EV is likely to offer:

  • Battery Options: 25 kWh and 35 kWh

  • Range: Around 300 km to 400 km on a full charge (ARAI-tested)

  • Power: Two versions – one with around 82 hp and another with 122 hp

  • Charging: Fast charging support and home charger options

These specs would make the Altroz EV suitable for both daily city use and occasional long drives.

Project on Hold, Not Cancelled

Tata Motors has clearly said that the Altroz EV is not cancelled, just paused. The reason is that Tata already has multiple EVs in the ₹9–15 lakh price range, such as the Tiago EV, Punch EV, and Nexon EV. Adding the Altroz EV right now may cause overlap in pricing and features.

The company wants to launch the Altroz EV when the timing is right — that is, when battery costs go down, customer demand rises, and better EV tech is available.

When Will It Launch?

As of now, there is no fixed date for the launch. However, experts believe that the Altroz EV could arrive in late 2026 or early 2027 once the updated EV platform is fully ready and other planned EVs (like the Sierra EV and Harrier EV) are launched.
